Single molecule diffraction.
For solving the atomic structure of organic molecules such as small proteins which are difficult to crystallize, the use of a jet of doped liquid helium droplets traversing a continuous high energy electron beam is proposed as a means of obtaining electron diffraction patterns (serial crystallography). Organic molecules (such as small proteins) within the droplet (and within a vitreous ice jack...
متن کاملApplication of Direct Methods to Dynamical Electron Diffraction Data for Solving Bulk Crystal Structures
The crystal structures of two previously unknown bulk phases in the Ga±In±Sn±O system have recently been solved using direct methods applied to electron diffraction intensities. In both cases, phasing of dynamical diffraction intensities clearly indicated the positions of O atoms in the crystal structures. It is shown here that a correlation between the dynamical diffraction amplitudes and the ...
متن کاملPrecession Electron Diffraction in the Transmission Electron Microscope: electron crystallography and orientational mapping
Precession electron diffraction (PED) is a hollow cone non-stationary illumination technique for electron diffraction pattern collection under quasikinematical conditions (as in X-ray Diffraction), which enables “ab-initio” solving of crystalline structures of nanocrystals. The PED technique is recently used in TEM instruments of voltages 100 to 300 kV to turn them into true electron diffractom...
متن کامل3D reconstruction of atomic structures from high angle annular dark field (HAADF) STEM images and its application on zeolite silicalite-1.
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) has shown to be very powerful for solving three-dimensional (3D) structures of unknown crystals. HRTEM has a unique advantage over diffraction for solving structures. Crystallographic structure factor phases, which are lost in diffraction can be directly obtained from HRTEM images. For the determination of a 3D crystalline structure by HR...
متن کاملImaging 180° Polarization Reversal in Ferroelectric Oxides with Electron Backscatter Diffraction
A ferroelectric material’s permittivity is dependent on the extrinsic contribution of domain wall displacement during the application of an external field, which can involve the motion of both 90° and 180° domain walls. Directly quantifying non-180° domain structures through diffraction based techniques is generally straightforward; as the diffraction condition will be different from one side o...
